Product description

The Roselli Grandmother knife, Damascus is one of our smallest outdoor knives, with a design rooted in Finnish tradition. Known in Finnish as Mummunhammas, meaning “grandmother’s tooth”, its unusual name comes from a time when small knives like this were used by elderly people to cut food into smaller pieces when their teeth were no longer strong enough.

Today, its compact 55 mm blade makes the Grandmother knife an exceptionally precise and controllable tool for detailed cutting, carving and everyday tasks in the forest and around camp. Its small size makes it easy to carry, while the substantial 4.5–5.5 mm blade gives it a solid and dependable feel in the hand.

The blade is made from Roselli’s own handcrafted Damascus steel, created from over 1,000 layers of steel. Each Damascus blade is made by our blacksmith Juho in Harmoinen, Finland. Creating such a fine layered structure is a meticulous and exceptionally time-intensive process that requires considerable skill, experience and craftsmanship before the blade can be shaped and finished by hand.

As the steel is worked, the intricate Damascus pattern develops throughout the blade. No two patterns are exactly alike, giving every finished knife its own individual character. With a hardness of around 60 HRC, the blade combines precise cutting performance with the distinctive appearance and exceptional craftsmanship of traditional Damascus steel.

The handle is crafted from stained Finnish curly birch and treated with linseed oil for a comfortable and secure grip. A 925 sterling silver ferrule adds a refined detail, complementing the natural grain of the wood and the unique pattern of the Damascus blade.

Each Grandmother knife, Damascus is crafted, sharpened and finished by hand in Harmoinen, Finland. It comes with a handcrafted sheath made from dark, vegetable-tanned Finnish leather, a diamond sharpener and a premium gift box.

FAQs

What is a Grandmother knife used for?

The Grandmother knife is a compact Finnish knife designed for small, precise cutting tasks. Its short 55 mm blade offers excellent control for carving, food preparation and detailed work outdoors where a larger knife is unnecessary.

Why is it called a Grandmother knife?

The knife is based on a traditional Finnish design known as “Mummunhammas”, meaning “grandmother’s tooth”. The name comes from a time when elderly people used small knives for preparing and cutting food when their teeth were no longer strong enough for the task.

What makes Roselli Damascus steel special?

The Grandmother knife, Damascus uses Roselli’s own handcrafted Damascus steel, created from over 1,000 layers of steel. The forging process produces the intricate layered pattern visible throughout the blade, giving every knife an individual appearance.

What is the difference between the Grandmother knife, Damascus and the Grandmother knife, UHC?

The Damascus version is made from over 1,000 layers of steel and focuses on exceptional craftsmanship, individuality and traditional Damascus construction. It also features a 925 sterling silver ferrule. The UHC version uses Roselli’s Ultra High Carbon steel and is the better choice when maximum sharpness and long-lasting edge retention are the main priorities.

Why is the Grandmother knife, Damascus made to order?

Each knife requires extensive handwork and is individually crafted in Harmoinen, Finland. The Damascus blade alone involves a demanding and time-intensive process before it can be shaped and finished by hand. The knife is then completed with Finnish curly birch, 925 sterling silver and a handcrafted leather sheath.
